December 26th: Psalm 7

Happy Christmas to anyone who is reading this. I hope you are enjoying a peaceful and enjoyable time.

Psalm 7:11 "God is a righteous judge, And a God who has indignation every day."  This verse stood out in my reading today. David who wrote this psalm sometimes struggles to see God's justice carried out when, at times, his enemies are triumphing. However, he expresses here that God is righteous, even if his timing is not always to our liking, and that he is indignant every day.

Day 165: 2 Kings 15-18

What a mess many of the kings we are reading about made by not following the God of their fathers. Finally, today, we read of Hezekiah who "did right in the eyes of the Lord". He even managed to destroy the high places where the people worshipped other God - something that even other good kings had been unable to do.

However we can see that at times he went for compromise - in today's reading he tried to "buy off" one of the enemies, even stripping gold from the temple to use as a ransom. This didn't guarantee peace for long and next thing he knows there at the walls of Jerusalem causing trouble again.

Often when we go for the "quick fix" it doesn't buy us much. How about we look for the longer term solution instead? Trusting God may seems like going the longer route at times, however when we get to the end of the journey we may realise we were spared a lot of wasted time, effort and pain.

Day 67: Numbers 19-21

Being perfect is tricky. Even Moses found it hard. He lead the people with great patience & perserverence and was obdient to the letter of God's commandments. However, when God told him how to produce water from a rock he made a mistake. Instead of speaking to the rock as God commanded, he struck it twice with his staff. God was angry with Moses and told him he had forfeited the chance to enter the promised land with the people. Moses had blown it.......

Day 59: Luke 19-21

Getting out of bed can be a struggle! Some people in particular seem to find it harder than others. When I first met Dawn she told me she was a morning person but after we got married I found out this was definitely not the case. I have less of a problem getting up, although there are some days where it is an effort. What helps is when there is something motivating you e.g. to catch an early flight on holiday.....

Day 50: Leviticus 19-21

Wow there's lots of weird and wonderful laws in Leviticus. There's a mixture of key principles such as your relationship & respect for others combined with some more unusual statements about how to trim your beard! In many cases these paint a strong contrast to the nations that the Israelites were to be evicting who practiced things like temple prostitution and child sacrifice. God, not surprisingly, wanted his people to be different (Holy). However being different is not always easy...........
